How to Choose the Right Kitchen Layout for Your Lifestyle – Key Insights from Our South Yarra Renovation

When I first stepped into this South Yarra home, I had a clear vision for the kitchen: it needed to feel warm, joyful, and completely integrated with the rest of the open-plan living space. The brief was to “open up” the existing kitchen and create something that looked more like furniture than a conventional workspace. My client was expecting her first child, so storage was also a top priority. What we ended up with was a space that not only delivered on functionality, but also captured a real sense of personality and timelessness.

Here’s what I learned from this project about choosing the right kitchen layout to suit your lifestyle – and a few of the custom touches that made all the difference.

Let Your Lifestyle Set the Foundation

Every kitchen renovation should begin with how you live. In this case, the kitchen had to work hard: it sat within a larger living/dining area, so it had to feel inviting and cohesive. We wanted it to look like part of the furniture, not just a standalone kitchen. That’s where the layout became so important. We opted for a large, central curved kitchen island – over four metres long! – which helped anchor the space while offering plenty of prep area, storage, and seating.

Because the island was so long, we had to join two slabs for the benchtop. That meant choosing a stone that didn’t have a strong vein pattern, so the join would visually dissolve. It’s those kinds of little details that really shape the outcome of a project, especially when you’re working with custom kitchen benchtops.

Smart Storage with Hidden Gems

With a new baby on the way, the client needed storage… and lots of it. But it had to be clever and seamless. We incorporated internal drawers on the dining side of the island, which meant we could add extra storage without disrupting the clean lines of the joinery. One of my favourite hidden details is the pop-up power point tower. It’s tucked into the island and can be hidden away completely when not in use, keeping the benchtop clutter-free.

We also included a kitchen hideaway cupboard, which helped reduce visual noise and gave the client a place to tuck away appliances and items not in daily use. These kinds of concealed features are a must-have in modern open-plan homes.

It’s All in the Details

While layout and structure are key, it’s often the smaller details that bring the whole design to life. For me, hardware is never an afterthought. In this project, I chose round timber handles that tied in beautifully with the timber flooring and added a playful touch to the room. They also reflected the client’s fun and joyful personality.

We carried this sense of fun into other elements too – like the custom kitchen island design ideas that included stone inserts on the sides and a curved bulkhead above that gently defines the kitchen zone within the larger room. The arched stone splashback and the Robert Gordon wall light added softness and warmth, and the colour palette – minty blues and apricots – was inspired by a fresh morning sky.

Designing with Constraints = Creative Outcomes

As with many renovations, we were working within a budget, so we chose a combination of laminate and two-pack cabinetry to strike the right balance between quality and cost. These sorts of creative constraints can often lead to more thoughtful solutions. Choosing a subtle stone for the benchtop, for instance, not only kept the look refined but also allowed us to manage the practicalities of the large island size.

Designing for Longevity

One thing I always tell clients is that quality brings longevity. It’s not about chasing trends; it’s about thoughtful design and using materials and trades that will stand the test of time. Looking back on this South Yarra kitchen renovation, what I’m most proud of is how all the details came together to reflect the client’s lifestyle and personality. And for me as a designer, that’s the most rewarding part of the job.
